Portage Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Program

The Portage DFC Program is part of a national initiative designed to strengthen community partnerships, reduce youth substance use, and build safer, healthier neighborhoods. Funded through the Drug-Free Communities Support Program Grant, this initiative supports evidence-based prevention strategies led by local coalitions like Hub Coalition Porter County.

Our Mission

Empowering Portage Through Prevention

Our focus in Portage is clear: prevent youth substance misuse before it starts, empower families and schools, and foster long-term community wellness.

About the Portage DFC Grant

Empowering communities to prevent youth substance use.

The Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Grant is a federal grant program administered by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and CDC. Its goal is to:

  • Strengthen collaboration among community sectors.

  • Reduce youth substance use rates over time.

  • Support prevention strategies that work at the local level.

Hub Coalition Porter County uses this grant to lead Portage-specific prevention efforts, build partnerships, and implement programs that equip youth with skills to make healthier choices.

Supporting youth, families, and communities.

The Portage DFC initiative brings together evidence-based programs designed to prevent substance use before it starts. By focusing on early intervention, education, mental health support, and community collaboration, these programs help build resilience, reduce risk factors, and strengthen protective factors for youth.

  • Preventure

Preventure is a science-based program designed to help youth develop coping skills, build resilience, and delay or prevent substance use. It focuses on personality-targeted interventions to address risk factors early—before problems arise. The program has been proven to reduce alcohol, tobacco, and drug use among teens.

  • Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid training equips community members, educators, parents, and students with the skills to recognize the signs of mental health or substance use challenges and respond effectively. These trainings are offered free throughout Porter County and help create a more informed, compassionate community.

  • Handle with Care

Handle with Care is a collaborative initiative between schools and law enforcement that provides early support for students exposed to trauma. When a child experiences a traumatic event, the school is discreetly notified so staff can provide extra care and understanding — ensuring students have a better chance to thrive academically and emotionally.
