Introduction: Shared Urgency, Shared Action
Suicide is not just a statistic — it’s a deeply human issue that touches families, friends, and entire communities. The Suicide Prevention Task Force of Porter County works tirelessly to reduce suicide rates, promote awareness, and offer hope to those who need it most. Through Hub Coalition Porter County’s Community Grant funding, the Task Force has expanded its reach, enhanced programming, and strengthened the safety net that supports residents in crisis.
Expanding Prevention Efforts
With this grant support, the Task Force has been able to launch school-based prevention programs, ensuring that students learn to recognize warning signs in themselves and others. They’ve also created comprehensive mental health resource guides for educators, parents, and healthcare providers — connecting people to life-saving support faster.
In addition, the Task Force organizes community outreach events across Valparaiso, Portage, Chesterton, and surrounding areas. These events not only raise awareness but also build trust, breaking down the stigma that often prevents people from seeking help.
The Power of Lived Experience
Many members of the Task Force have a personal connection to suicide — as survivors, family members, or mental health advocates. Their experiences bring authenticity and empathy to the mission, transforming loss into purpose. This lived experience fuels their work in both prevention and postvention, helping families heal while ensuring that others never have to walk the same path alone.
Building a Community Safety Net
The Task Force’s strength lies in collaboration. By working closely with schools, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and local organizations, they’ve built an interconnected network of support across Porter County. Every new partnership strengthens the safety net — ensuring that no one in crisis is ever far from help, whether it’s a caring teacher, a trained peer, or a first responder equipped with mental health resources.
Stand With the Task Force
Everyone has a role to play in suicide prevention. You can be part of this life-saving work by:
- Attending a training such as QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) or Mental Health First Aid.
- Sharing resources from the Task Force and Hub Coalition Porter County on social media.
- Volunteering your time to support awareness events or local outreach initiatives.
Together, we can continue to build a community where connection replaces isolation, understanding replaces stigma, and hope replaces despair.
